Energy efficiency or energy rationalization in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a major talk on the table. The Saudi Energy Efficiency Centre was established in 2010 to rationalize and increase energy efficiency in production and consumption to enhance KSA’s economic and social structure and preserve its natural resources.
Diversification of energy resources and their preservation, preservation of natural resources, achieving the threshold energy mix, reducing carbon emissions, and increasing energy quality across sectors in Saudi Arabia are some significant issues the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation (SASO) actively pursues. Focus on green energy and utilization of electrical power only to the levels of necessity is the priority of the Saudi government.
Saudi Energy Efficiency Centre proposed the Saudi Energy Efficiency Program in 2012, which aims to enhance and facilitate the culture of energy efficiency and management across different sectors in Saudi Arabia. The program focuses on critical areas of energy optimization opportunities, improving resource utilization, building sustainable energy efficiency culture, and setting strict guidelines and measures for energy efficiency.
Specialized government authorities, government institutions, companies, and the private sector have collaborated and worked under one roof to harness the energy revolution in KSA.
Energy Efficiency Label Explained
With energy conservation as the agenda, the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation (SASO) issued the regulations for the Energy Efficiency Label to rationalize the use of electrical energy by various electrical and electronic items and devices.
Energy Efficiency Label is meant for electrical appliances to highlight their energy consumption levels in the open. The EE (Electrical and Electronic) label is like an energy efficiency rating card that demonstrates to the consumer of a particular electrical appliance- the amount of energy consumed by the appliance, which affects the consumer’s energy bills.
The aim behind regulating electrical appliances with Energy Efficiency Label is to reduce the demand for energy consumption in Saudi Arabia over the next 20 years. As per the regulations set by SASO through the Energy Efficiency label, all electrical appliances falling under the rules must have an Energy Efficiency label attached to them with proper markings and correct information – demonstrating the energy consumption level for them to be commercially used in Saudi Arabia.
The SASO Energy Efficiency Rating system is a labeling system that informs consumers about the efficiency and energy consumption of an electric appliance. After successfully registering the unit in the system, the label reflects the efficiency and level of energy consumption. The system generates an energy efficiency label which is an awareness card for the consumer and is installed on the product denoting its level of energy efficiency.
An energy efficiency label has the following information displayed on the product-
· Type of product
· Product specifications
· QR Code
· Trademark
· Place of origin
· Model number
· Quantity of product purchased annually
According to the new Energy Efficiency Labelling Regulations (EER), the following types of products require to identify their level of energy efficiency:
- Refrigerators – freezers
- Air conditioners (small and large capacity)
- Washing machines
- Electric motors
- Cloth dryers
- Water heaters
- Electric engines
- Lighting products
- Tires
- New light vehicles
SASO Energy Efficiency Rating Certificate
The appliances imported to Saudi Arabia under SASO regulations are tested against energy efficiency level guidelines and standards only after good test reports are issued an Energy Efficiency rating certificate.
All EE appliances under SASO regulations must declare their energy efficiency levels and energy consumption through a proper energy efficiency label for seamless customs clearance in Saudi Arabia.
Let us go through some key factors involved with the Energy Efficiency label-
- Only a legally registered third-party organization under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Saudi Arabia or a SASO-notified body is authorized to issue an Energy Efficiency rating certificate.
- The SASO Energy Efficiency rating Certificate is valid for one year.
- The Energy Efficiency Label is to be mentioned only on SASO-regulated EE items.
- A transparent declaration from both the exporter and the importer
