Saudi Arabia is taking a major step towards reducing e-waste and promoting sustainability by standardizing charging ports for smartphones, tablets, and other portable electronic devices sold in the Kingdom.
In a new regulation issued by the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO), manufacturers will be required to adopt either the USB Type-C or USB Power Delivery charging standards specified in the updated SASO IEC 62680-1-2:2017 and SASO IEC 62680-1-3:2017 technical specifications.
The Executive Decision No. 018 aims to enable consumers to use a common charger across different brands and device categories, eliminating the need for dedicated chargers and charger heads for each device.
Key Highlights:
- Applies to new models of portable electronics like smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones etc.
- Manufacturers must use USB-C or USB PD ports for charging
- Supports Saudi sustainability goals by reducing e-waste from disposable chargers
- Increases consumer convenience with a universal charging solution
- All SASO-accredited conformity assessment bodies to ensure compliance
While an implementation timeline is still awaited, manufacturers and importers are advised to start aligning their product roadmaps to meet this regulatory requirement.
Existing certified models already in the market will be allowed to continue sales until the stocks last.
As one of SASO’s accredited certifying bodies, Verger Group is committed to enforcing these updated standards.
