SASO Adopts New Mandatory Specifications Updates For Chargers

The Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization (SASO) have recently made important decisions to enhance mandatory standards within the realm of electronic devices. During its meeting No. (01/193/2023) On 1/15/1445 AH, SASO deliberated and arrived at the conclusion to revise the obligatory standards governing smartphones, tablets, and electronic device chargers. The modifications encompass the subsequent specifications:

  1. Standard Specification: Universal Serial Bus (USB) Communication Interfaces for Data and Power – Part 1-2: General Components – Power Delivery Specifications for (USB): This specification entails the guidelines pertaining to the communication interfaces of Universal Serial Bus (USB) as applied to both data transfer and power supply functionalities. Notably, it concentrates on the specifications concerning power delivery via USB interfaces. It is incumbent upon manufacturers to ensure compliance with this specification, and this requirement becomes effective from 1/1/2025 AD.
  2. Standard Specification: Data and Power (USB) Universal Serial Bus Communication Interfaces – Part 1-3: Universal Serial Bus Communication Interfaces – General Components – Connector and Cable Specifications for (USB) Type-C™: This standard specification addresses the intricate aspects of data and power communication interfaces within Universal Serial Bus (USB) frameworks. Specifically, it centers on the comprehensive specifications for connectors and cables inherent to the USB Type-C™ interfaces. Manufacturers are entrusted with the responsibility of adhering to these stipulations, and this compliance becomes obligatory from 1/1/2025 AD.

These revisions underscore the commitment of SASO to bolster the standards and quality of electronic devices, ensuring that smartphones, tablets, and electronic device chargers meet stringent criteria for compatibility, safety, and performance. The set implementation dates signify a conscious effort to allow manufacturers sufficient time to adjust their production processes and methodologies in accordance with the updated standards.
